Association Between Smoking and Serum GlycA and High‐Sensitivity C‐Reactive Protein Levels: The Multi‐Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA‐Brasil)

BACKGROUND Inflammation is suggested to be a central feature of atherosclerosis, particularly among smokers. We studied whether inflammatory biomarkers GlycA and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein are associated with cigarette smoking. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 11 509 participants, 6774 from the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) and 4735 from ELSA-Brasil (The Brazilian Longit...

Associations of Cigarette Smoking With Subclinical Inflammation and Atherosclerosis: ELSA‐Brasil (The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health)

BACKGROUND There is a need to identify sensitive biomarkers of early tobacco-related cardiovascular disease. We examined the association of smoking status, burden, time since quitting, and intensity, with markers of inflammation and subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS We studied 14 103 participants without clinical cardiovascular disease in ELSA-Brasil (Brazilian Longitudinal Stu...

Relationships of Serum Level of High- Sensitivity C- Reactive Protein (hs- CRP) and White Blood Cell (WBC) Count with Gamma- Glutamyltransferase among Iranian Healthy Adults

Background & Objective: There are many common infections and inflammations among people over the world. This demands an affordable and reliable test with high sensitivity/specificity to predict or confirm the diagnosis of such cases in routinely clinical practice. In the present study, we aimed to find any potential correlation between serum levels of GGT and CRP- Q and/or hs- CRP and ...

Association between perceived neighbourhood characteristics, physical activity and diet quality: results of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

BACKGROUND The study explores associations between perceived neighbourhood characteristics, physical activity and diet quality, which in Latin America and Brazil have been scarcely studied and with inconsistent results. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 14,749 individuals who participated in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adu...

Association of N-Linked Glycoprotein Acetyls and Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Mortality

BACKGROUND Acute phase proteins highlight the dynamic interaction between inflammation and oncogenesis. GlycA, a novel nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) inflammatory marker that identifies primarily circulating N-acetyl glycan groups attached to acute phase proteins, may be a future CRC risk biomarker. METHODS We examined the association between GlycA and incident CRC and mortality in two pros...
